The Right Volume

World comes flashy and loud, in constant waves.
Word comes plain and gentle and knocks for entry.

World says “Blaze your own trail!”
Word says “Sidle up and follow me.”

World says “Look around. Be impressed.”
Word says “Look to Me. Be struck with wonder.”

World says “Sport your crown. Strut your stuff.”
Word says “Crown him with many crowns.”

World says “Read self-help books. Find inner peace.”
Word says “I keep in perfect peace the mind stayed on Me.”

World says “Make sure to do lots of good stuff.”
Word says “I simply want a heart broken for me.”

World says to flesh: “Trim here; plump there. Also exfoliate!”
Word says “I became flesh; moved into your neighborhood.”

World says “Pick me. Pick me!” with hand stretched high.
Word says “The last will be first and the first will be last.”

World says “Live (chase) The American Dream!”
Word says “Come dream with Me.”

World says “Keep pace with me or get left behind!”
Word says “I am with you even until the end of the age.”

World says “Pick and choose what you wanna believe.”
Word says “Inscribe my words on your gates and your hearts.”

World says “All we need is love!”
Word says “Without God, all is meaningless.”

World says “Take care to build a life for yourself.”
Word says “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life.”

World says “Worship the children!”
Word says “Train a child in the way he should go…”

World says “Get mad! Get even!”
Word says “Love–even pray for–your enemies.”

World says “Push through the pain!”
Word says “Come to me all you who are weary…”

World says “If you need to, throw a pity party.”
Word says “Be joyful always…”

World says “Ride the wave when others praise you.”
Word says “Praise only Him who makes oceans wave.”

World says “What will they think ?!”
Word says “Concern yourself only with what I think.”

World says “Keep up with the Joneses!” (…or the Kardashians!)
Word says “Store up treasure secure from destruction.”

World says “You can make it on your own.”
Word says “Keep gathering together.”

World says “Go along to get along.”
Word says “The Lukewarm make Me gag.”

World says “Whatever seems right to you is fine by me.”
Word says “There’s a way that seems right to a man…”

…but, in the end, it’s the way of death.

Only one small line separates World from Word but what first attracts the eye is only skin deep. It looks lovely upon first glance. Reads as luminous. Feels luxurious. But, when all is peeled back, we’re left wanting and waiting. A bride stood up at the altar.

We need bigger and better. It’ll never be enough. And although much of World is good and meant for pleasure, it never fills the appetite. Just whets it for something–Someone–more.

Word needs not the extra letter. He speaks for himself; doesn’t have to spell it out. His Presence is large enough to fill up galaxies yet agile enough to step into a single human heart.

Word spoke World into thin air. Logos dressed in skin to walk a while in our shoes and show us A Better Way.

He’s the Lion; He’s the Lamb. Light and Life. Lord over all and, still, the Lover of this small soul. He leaves us not in longing.

Don’t get too comfortable. Pay attention.

Look for Him. Listen to Him. Lead others to Him. Let your light shine so that others will praise Word in heaven instead of World who–even with the “l”–still leaves us lacking, listless, and lied to.

World says “Mind your image.”
Word says “Bear My image.”
